New Delhi: Former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam is likely to announce his decision today on whether he will contest the Presidential election. According to sources, the BJP and the Trinamool Congress are urging him to contest. Senior BJP leader Sudheendra Kulkarni met the former president at his home today.

If Kalam decides to throw in his hat in the ring, he may pose a formidable challenge to Pranab Mukherjee who has emerged as a front runner in the race to Raisina Hill. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish kumar may then have to decide who he will back.

According to sources, the Bihar CM is believed to have also conveyed to the BJP “politely but firmly” that his party favoured “nothing else than consensus” on Pranab.

Compulsions of governance and NDA’s internal politics are said to be steering Nitish. The chief minister has been seeking special category status for Bihar from the Centre. He is also believed to be wary of the rise of Narendra Modi, particularly after the BJP started projecting the Gujarat chief minister as a national leader. Nitish yesterday met Jairam Ramesh in Patna and reminded the Union minister of a letter the chief minister had written to the Prime Minister on the special status.

Consensus eludes NDA

The NDA had met yesterday morning at Advani’s residence deferred its decision. Dal (U) president Sharad Yadav, who is also the coalition’s convener, told reporters that Advani would consult the BJP as well as NDA chief ministers Nitish Kumar and Parkash Singh Badal. “More discussions are required to arrive at the right decision,” said Yadav.

BJP and NDA sources said the political imperative at this juncture was to keep the coalition intact and not give the impression that the NDA was a divided house, “ripe for the UPA to encroach upon”. Sources said a hint of discord would not only enable the Congress to grandstand — especially after the UPA roped in the Samajwadi Party, BSP and the Telangana Rashtra Samiti to back Mukherjee —but also trigger speculation about the durability of the Dal (U)’s long-standing alliance with the BJP.

The absence of the Shiv Sena from yesterday's consultations fed rumours of the NDA working at odds. Sena sources, however, claimed that their representative and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut was “preoccupied” with a scheduled programme of which the BJP was informed in advance. “I will emphasise that the Sena will not do anything contrary to the NDA,” a Sena source said.
Why is Kalam not keen on contesting so far
The former president reportedly does not want to be pushed into a token contest which he was bound to lose and would only make him look power-hungry. "Although Dr Kalam advises youngsters to dream, he is also a realist with his feet rooted to the ground. So he knows which way the presidential wind is blowing now,” said a former professor of Anna University, who had worked with him.
According to Kalam’s close friends, his innate decency in not wanting to hurt Mamata has so far kept him from coming out in public about staying away from the contest.  “When Mulayam backed out suddenly, not only Mamata but even Dr Kalam was shocked. Mamata personally apologised to him for this,” said the Kalam aide. According to another source — the editor of a Tamil daily — Kalam had told him a month ago that in the absence of a consensus, he would not throw his hat in the ring.

There will be a common admission examination process in the country from 2013 for undergraduate programmes in engineering in institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other Central educational institutions.

This will be through a Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) that wil be conducted in two parts, JEE-MAIN and JEE-ADVANCED, with weightage given to performance in the Class XII Board examinations.

This was decided at a meeting of the Joint Councils of IITs, NITs, IIITs and other Central educational institutions here today, which was presided over by Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal, after a process of deliberations and consultations spanning over two years.

According to an official press release, the Class XII Board/equivalent marks normalized on percentile basis through an appropriate formula plus the marks obtained in the JEE-MAIN examination, with equal weightage, would be used by IITs for purposes of gating/screening.

Only a fixed number of candidates (five times the number of the seats for admission in the IIT system or a pre-fixed cut-off) screened on the basis of merit assessed on the basis of cumulative score of normalized School Board marks and performance in JEE-MAIN examination would be eligible to be considered for admission.

The ranking for admission to undergraduate programmes in IITs would be based entirely on the performance in the JEE-ADVANCED examination from amongst the candidates screened through this process.

For all other Centrally funded Institutions, there would be 40% weightage for performance in Class XII Board marks normalized on percentile basis through an appropriate formula, 30% weightage for performance in JEE-MAIN and 30% weightage in JEE-ADVANCED and a combined merit decided accordingly.

JEE-MAIN tests shall be multiple choice objective type paper whereas the nature and modalities of the JEE-ADVANCED shall be determined by the Joint Admission Board of IITs.

The proposed changes will be effective from the year 2013 and both CFTIs and CBSE would work jointly.

The Joint Admission Board (JAB) of the IIT system would have complete control on matters such as paper setting, evaluation and preparation of the merit list, etc. over the JEE-ADVANCED and CBSE would provide the administrative support for conduct of the examination.

<p>Advertisement</p>ADVERTISEMENT
For the conduct of the JEE-MAIN examination an expanded Joint Admission Board shall be constituted including the NIT system, other CFTIs and State Government representatives in an appropriate manner. CBSE will provide the administrative and logistic support for the conduct of JEE-MAIN examination across the country.

The process of establishing co-ordination between COBSE & JAB-IITs for implementation of the core curriculum in sciences and mathematics across the CBSE, ICSE and State Boards shall be put in place immediately.

Those students who have appeared in the Class XII Board examinations in 2012 and wish to improve upon their performance can appear again for the Board examinations in 2013. CBSE and State Boards would make appropriate arrangements to facilitate this through a special dispensation.

The transparency processes established by the IIT system presently and in AIEEE-2012 shall be adopted for the JEE-MAIN and JEE-ADVANCED, too, the release said.

The decision seeks to address the concern in society caused by the multiplicity of entrance examinations that a student intending to pursue a course in engineering has to appear for.

The burden imposed on the students in terms of time, payment of examination fees and the stress caused in scheduling and preparing for each examination is tremendous. The students have to perforce restrict their choice of institutions for which they can compete.

The Government has been working on reforms in the examination system by moving towards a common national test to reduce the burden on the students and at the same time preserving the autonomy of the State Governments and institutions in devising its admission process.

According to the release, another serious problem with the present system is the neglect of the Class XII examination process while admitting students to engineering institutions. This has led to the almost complete disregard to the secondary school system and neglect of education imparted in schools, impacting quality and access.

Parents and children have been forced to seek access to outside-the-school instruction methods to enable the student to prepare for the multitude of entrance examinations. The proposed reform attempts to bring focus back to the schooling system by giving weightage to performance in Class XII Board examinations normalized on percentile basis. The reform would, in the longer term, have an impact on the quality of secondary education and enable better quality access, the release said.

It said the Joint Councils of IITs, NITs & IIITs considered various views that had emerged during the process of consultations. A strong body of opinion amongst the members of the Council was that the importance of the schooling system has to be revived in the larger public interest by giving due weightage to the performance of students in the Class XII Board examinations and at the same time maintaining the credibility and integrity of admissions to higher educational institutions.

A meeting of State Education Ministers’ is proposed for June 5 where the participation of States in the common national test process would be deliberated upon. States would have the freedom to join in the process and have the autonomy to determine their own relative weightages to normalized Class XII Board marks, performance in JEE-MAIN and JEE-ADVANCED, the release added.
The studios that produce Hollywood's biggest blockbusters are always on the same wavelength. Whether it's meteor disaster movies, animated bug comedies, or revisionist Snow White tales, audiences never get just one. As if they're pulling ideas from some communal think tank, everyone's spinning the latest craze in their own fashion. Hey, as long as they're good!
This weekend sees the release of two comedies with an odd connection: Celebrity burnouts from the 1980s. Rock of Ages costars Tom Cruise as frontman for the rock band Arsenal, the legendary Stacee Jaxx, who we see preparing for a "solo career" aka nowheresville. That's My Boy sees Adam Sandler riding his fame as a child tabloid celebrity all the way to modern day, where he's broke, drunk and... stuck in nowheresville. Coincidence? Pretty much, but it does make for a heated weekend between two of the movie business' biggest stars in a competition of scumbags. Who is the victor? We compare the two:
Cruise as Stacee Jaxx: A Washed Up Icon of '80s Hair Metal
Sandler as Donny: A Washed Up Icon of '80s Pop Culture
Winner: Sandler. Even a washed up rock star like Stacee Jaxx has a legacy of headbang-worthy tunes. All Donny has is massive debt, a swollen ego, and a TV movie recounting the time he impregnated his middle school teacher. And it rarely airs!
Cruise as Stacee Jaxx: Relies on nostalgia by singing "Pour Some Sugar on Me"
Sandler as Donny: Relies on nostalgia by resurfacing the '90s catchphrase "Wassssuuuuuup!"
Winner: Cruise. The beer commercial slogan may not have been that funny the first time, but Cruise's Jaxx is such a rock star dud that he has to cover '80s songs made famous by other hair metal bands.
Cruise as Stacee Jaxx: Mistakenly believes Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones is visiting him (because that's possible).
Sandler as Donny: Actually hangs out with Vanilla Ice.
Winner: Cruise. Jaxx's ego is so inflated that the mere mention of Rolling Stone magazine has his head snapping up gopher-style, looking around for his famous "friends." Vanilla Ice may be a burnout in his own right, but at least he's a genuine friend to Donny.
Cruise as Stacee Jaxx: Names his pet monkey "Heyman"
Sandler as Donny: Names his son "Han Solo"
Winner: Sandler. Nothing screams "I had a kid star when I was thirteen," like naming your son after a popular sci-fi character.
Cruise as Stacee Jaxx: Drinks 100 year old champagne while peeing on his manager.
Sandler as Donny: Drinks a Budweiser while scaling the side of a building.
Winner: Cruise. Sandler's Donny can always be seen chugging a brewski at an inappropriate time, but Jaxx makes it a point to both guzzle alcohol while acting like a total loser. Downing the century-old bubbly would be a rock star move, but peeing on his manager's foot while doing so is near-hobo behavior.
Cruise as Stacee Jaxx: Sings into a female reporter's butt
Sandler as Donny: Rubs one out to a photo of a grandmother
Winner: Sandler. No explanation needed.
Cruise as Stacee Jaxx: Proves even a drunk rocker is capable of true love.
Sandler as Donny: Proves even a drunk do-nothing is capable of turning everyone around him into drunk do-nothings
Winner: Sandler. In the last act of Rock of Ages, it's clear there's hope for Stacee Jaxx's solo career. In the finale of That's My Boy, one wonders why anyone gives Sandler's Donny two seconds of their time. In some cases, it's "once a burnout, always a burnout."
Rajini

Rajini, Deepika - Kochadaiyaan

Its being strongly speculated that superstar Rajini and Deepika Padukone will have a classical dance number in Kochadaiyaan. Although the movie is shot using motion capturing, which means you will see less of the actors but more of the visual effects, it will be interesting to watch the performance nevertheless.
Those were the days when proficiency in skills like classical dancing and singing were part of the qualifications that would fetch you a film offer. We still have actors trained in both but they are rare. Our thought was triggered by Kamal’s Kathak performance in the Viswaroopam trailer. Here’s an attempt to chronicle the best of Kollywood classical dancers of recent times.

Kamal

Kamal - Viswaroopam, Salangai Oli and lot of films

What form of classical dance can Kamal not do? Nothing, almost! From his beginning days in films like Salangai Oli, in which he did a brilliant Bharatanatyam number, to his latest in Viswaroopam performing Kathak, Kamal has come a long way. It only reiterates Kamal’s dedication and perseverance towards learning new things, despite being a veteran in the industry.
Russell Brand does sometimes address his failed marriage with Katy Perry, but that apparently doesn’t mean it’s fine to always ask him about her.
Brand recently got upset while chatting with talk show host Graham Norton when asked about his divorce with Perry, states RadarOnline. “My mum is here. She got upset when you dragged up my marriage,” Brand commented.
“I saw her cry, Graham. That’s the reality because it’s real people, Graham, that’s my real mum. I have come here to promote a film and you made my mum cry,” Brand continued.
However, Norton defended himself by commenting that it would be weird to not ask as Perry was recently on the show, but Brand wasn’t buying it.
“What I would have done, mate, in your position is come up to me before the show and gone ‘Eh, listen it’s a bit odd your ex-missus was on last week. I might mention it, is that OK?’ But in all of the chatting and the research backstage, no one mentioned it,” Brand finished.
Starring: Nitin Sathya, Disha Pandey, Ganja Karuppu Direction: S.T. VendhanMusic: KannanProduction: T Rajeshwari

Vendhan’s Mayanginen Thayanginen starring Nitin Sathya, Disha Pandey, Pawan, Tharun Shatriya, Tejasri and Ajay Rathnam has hit the screens this week. The makers boast that it is a romantic film, filled with unusual twists and turns.

Apart from the main story line, there are three more stories talked about in Mayanginen Thayanginen. But neither has the smallest link with the main story line, which is supposedly Nitin Sathya’s. The director has also stuffed the script with all possible tragic events.

Can we ever forget the old movies where the lead actor, who has a low earning job, has a crippled sister, a well educated but unemployed brother, seriously ill mother, father a drunkard, and as if these are not enough troubles a villain hunting for his life? Well, director Vendhan, for a change has given a similar scenario to the film’s heroine Disha Pandey. Later, when Nitin Sathya falls in love with her, his fate completely changes.

Ganja Karuppu, Pawan and Tharun Shatriya play the friends of Nitin Sathya. But, their relationship hasn’t been properly established. Ganja Karuppu’s cousin loves Pawan, and Tharun falls in love with Ajay Rathnam’s wife, Tejasri. But, both tracks hang unlinked to the main story. Ajay Rathnam plays a bad cop and a bad husband. His story in the film too appears unnecessary and insignificant. Sanjana’s item number doesn’t fit the situation.

The technical department fails to impress in the film. Rameswaran’s cinematography appears less professional. For instance, it is not hard to notice the lens being adjusted during the opening of the film. Editing was understandably jumpy, after all it went through a hundred cuts to get a U certificate. Music director Kannan has done a pretty decent job. His songs, particularly ‘Kanavil Neeyum’ is melting. But, it looks as if he lost interest while doing the BGMs. His idea of using a lugubrious Nadaswaram tune for a death scene is definitely old school and very disturbing.

Most of the dialogues were too poetic (like Maane, Thene, Pon Maane). Every character in the film seemed to possess a poet in him or her. The hero’s usage of chaste Tamil to explain his love was unnatural.

The lusty dialogues and excessive glamour stuffed in the film cause nothing but irritation. There were also scenes reminiscent of at least three films released earlier. Other problems were continuity, unexplained and implausible happenings, mismatched SFXs and so on.

On the whole Vendhan’s Mayanginen Thayanginen is a strenuous watch.
Starring: Emraan Hashmi, Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin, Prosenjit Chatterjee Direction: Dibakar BanerjeeMusic: Vishal-ShekharProduction: PVR Pictures

Highly acclaimed director Dibakar Banerjee’s latest offering is Shanghai. It is based on the novel Z by Vassilis Vassilikos. The movie has a very interesting star cast of Emraan Hashmi, Abhay Deol and Kalki Koechlin. This film has been distributed by PVR Pictures and produced by DBP and NFDC. The trailer gave us exactly what to expect – a political thriller based on an investigation into a ‘planned’ accident. Does the actual film satiate our appetite for a riveting investigative thriller?

Bharat Nagar is a typical Indian city (fictional) comprising a lot of na├пve, uneducated locals who are all blindly passionate about their ruling party IBP. A big business proposal, also called the IBP (International Business Park) is about to come to this place thereby making it a major developmental hub and a possible Shanghai in future.

The ruling party is firmly behind this business idea. But, social activist Dr. Ahmedi (Prosenjit Chatterjee) wishes to let people know of the actual ground realities of this project and how people would be driven out of their own homes and lands for the sake of this infrastructure.

What follows is a relentless pursuit for justice as Dr.Ahmedi is majorly incapacitated due to an accident. An investigation starts under the helm of the sincere T.A. Krishnan (Abhay Deol), a high ranking bureaucrat. Shalini (Kalki), Dr. Ahmedi’s fierce supporter is dying to expose the people behind Ahmedi’s plight while Joginder (Emraan), a videographer who is also into pornography, backs Shalini in her pursuit for justice with some important evidence.

The above incidents were all nicely packaged in the trailer itself. Now, whether the actual culprits are exposed, whether the hunt for the truth is fruitful and what happens to the aforementioned protagonists is what Shanghai, the ‘movie’ is about.

Emraan Hashmi has pulled off a really different role in his career for the first time. He has totally gone for an ugly, de-glam look with a paunch as well. His teeth are colored, his laughs are typically rustic and his dressing sense is anything but classy. But, his character wins our hearts. Great show by Emraan. Kalki is fierce and aggression personified. Her character’s motives are lofty and honest. Abhay Deol is a Tamilian in the movie and his English has needlessly been tweaked to make it sound like a Tamilian’s. For example office is pronounced as ‘affice’. A needless gimmick. He speaks broken Tamil also for few seconds and is shown listening to the Vishnu Sahasranamam too. Abhay is required to underplay and he does it well. Prosenjit Chatterjee looks majestic with his beard and spectacles.

There are a lot of local character artistes too, who have done their parts well. The songs by Vishal-Shekhar are among the entertaining elements in the movie. ‘Bharat Mata Ki’ is a chartbuster already. Shanghai has an amazing BGM score too. The movie in fact warrants a repeat just for the pulsating BGM score. The music for the climax and the end credits roll take the cake.

To conclude, Shanghai is another worthy offering from Dibakar Banerjee. He has taken Indian politics as the main subject area and based a nice investigative thriller around it. The way the police and high ranking officials are merely puppets used by politicians according to their whims and fancies, is an oft-repeated plotline in Indian films. But, here it has been shown in a realistic manner without any overt cinematic licenses. How small Indian towns are exploited in the name of big infrastructural development is very relevant to the current times.

The movie is gripping from the word go. You will find yourself sucked into the happenings on screen. The item numbers could have been avoided though
Starring: Hemachandran, Nandana, Renuka, Shanmugaraja, Balasingh Direction: Dhanapal PadmanabanMusic: NR RagunanthanProduction: Dr. Santhi Duraisamy

These are the days we are bombarded with commercial entertainers and these are also the times Tamil art-house cinema is almost beginning to sound like an oxymoron. However, a perfect blend of art house cinema and entertainment is always welcome and is becoming the norm of the day. Movies like Vazhakku En 18/9 tactfully straddled the thin line and provided us with a wholesome movie experience.

To some extent, director Dhanapal Padmanabhan has managed a balance between commercial and art-house cinema in Krishnaveni Panjaalai. What you get is a minimalistic view of characters and their lives in the movie. There is only straightforward storytelling, but the characters are somewhat neatly sketched out. However, this gives a feeling of interrupted film viewing.

As the name suggests, the movie is about the trials and tribulations of running a cotton mill. The mill’s function is mired with incessant labor issues and ineffectual management. The story circum-navigates people whose lives are entwined with the mill and how the functioning of the mill forms the fulcrum of their lives. Somewhere there is a love story thrown in along with an honor killing by a mother who is unrepentant about her acts.

In a story that has myriad potential to be turned into a sappy and sentimental fare, Dhanapal Padmanabhan exercises restraint and presents an outsider’s look into the lives of characters. The way the plot is structured is neat and on the whole the subject is treated with sensitivity. The stories unravel based on the timeline of the mill’s closure and as the characters go about their lives, it slowly dawns on you that they are jobless for about a year – all this while pulling through financial difficulties.

The movie is dotted with actors who effortlessly slip into the skin of the characters they play. You learn that Dhanapal conducted a 30-day workshop preceding the movie’s shoot and that the movie has, for the first time in Tamil, a casting director – Shanmugaraja. All these efforts are pretty evident as the characters wade in and out and gather your compassion as they appear onscreen.  Krishnaveni is a film on mill workers and being the son of a mill worker, Dhanapal has the advantage of presenting it in a perspective mostly unknown to others.

All the actors, Hemachandran, Nandhana, Rajiv Krishna, Shamugaraja, M. S. Baskar, Ajayan Bala, Renuka, Thennavan, Balasingh, Poovitha and Hemalatha have done a neat job of handling their roles. Suresh Bargav’s camera ensures that you do not wander from the story by highlighting just enough that is required for the movie’s script. And one get’s a feeling that the editing could have been better. N Raghunandan’s music is passable. But the song, Aathaadi and Un Kankal grabs your attention.

On the flipside, it’s unavoidable that you get a slightly off-handed feeling of a documentary hovering around Krishnaveni Panjaalai. Also in some places, the film goes over dramatic. However, with movies that dwell into issues that have never been explored, it seems the viewers can expect an uprising of such products in Tamil.
Starring: Anirudh, Jyothsna, Vani Kishore Direction: Vasu BaskarMusic: Srikanth DevaProduction: Vasu Baskar

No matter how beaten to pulp and stale love as a subject becomes, it never fails to spawn ideas and imagination of our filmmakers. Marupadiyum Oru Kadhal is one such movie that is a mishmash of love from today and back from the eighties – or whenever love entered into the world of Tamil films as a predominant subject.

Director Vasu Baskar weaves a tale of love and longing in the world of internet and Face Book with outdated elements like love without the couple seeing each other and suchlike. As if it’s not enough that the movie is riddled with ludicrous logical loopholes, it’s also mired with concepts that even the television serials are afraid to carry these days.

A couple – two medical college students – are head over heels in love but they haven’t seen each other. If this reminds you of Kadhal Kottai days, what follows is something reminiscent of days even before Kadhal Kottai. You see the heroine singing to the hero, who is in his deathbed, to make him realize that she is the love of his life and you see lovers exchanging photos but the coy girl sending the boy a picture blackening the part of the eye so he cannot recognize her.

The movie opens with an accident. An inebriated man is hit by a lorry and as before he slips into unconsciousness, his entire life flashes before his eyes. The director wants you to believe that the poor guy became an alcoholic because of a girl’s love - who even refuses to meet him eye to eye. In these days of speed dating and relationships influenced by social networking, you have a hard time believing that such drama will be saleable.

The film’s leads Annirudh and Jyothsna fill the screen with their dead beat presence. You tend to think that they are probably tired of the movie, as much as you are as an audience. But that’s probably the screenplay’s strength or the lack of it. They do look like they have the potential to shine in a better story.

Srikanth Deva’s music and the movie’s cinematography are a few endurable aspects. If you consider the things the director should have done away with, the laundry list seems endless - starting from the stale theme of blind love without seeing each other.

That said, but for the very sloppy story and the screenplay, the movie is shot well. The scenes in London are nicely captured and the songs – yes what if the film’s lead haven’t seen eye to eye they can still do dream song sequences – are well shot in good locales. And that remains the only takeaway of the movie that is largely a sappy fare of unrequited love of a man and an unreasonably prude girl.

Super Star Rajinikanth paid a surprise visit to the Gopalapuram residence of  DMK chief and Ex CM Karunanidhi this morning. The actor caught up with the veteran politician for about half an hour between 10.30 and 11 am and Karunanidhi’s son and politician Stalin was also present during the meeting. Though the finer details of the meeting are not yet out, the surprise visit has raised many eye brows. The actor has not been very active in the social circuit after his illness and rarely does he venture out.

However, Rajini has said that the meeting was purely to pay respects to the veteran and wish him for his birthday which was celebrated on June 3.

kamal-haasan-vishwaroopam-16-06-12

Even before Kamal Haasan’s ambitious project Vishwaroopam is released, the actor is gung-ho about doing a sequel to Vishwaroopam. The actor who has also directed the flick has said that he has a script for the sequel and is working on it. He added that there’s a scope for a sequel and instead of doing a very lengthy Vishwaroopam, he wants to tell the story in two films.
Vishwaroopam stars Pooja Kumar, Andrea and Sekar Kapur. Earlier Kamal has done a sequel to the successful film Kalyanaraman which was titled Japanil Kalyanaraman.
Contrary to media reports director Sargunam has clarified to Behindwoods that he is not doing Manja Pye with Vimal in the lead. He is doing a film with Dhanush and the film is titled Sotta Valla Kutty. The film will hit the floors in September and the first leg of the shoot will be held in Hosur followed by Nagerkoil. The director has roped in the music director of Vagai Sooda Vaa, Gibran to score the music. Manja Pye will be directed by one of Sargunam's assistant directors, Naveen.
New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi will meet her party's toughest ally Mamata Banerjee in the national capital today seeking to build consensus on the UPA's candidate for President.

The Congress has so far not named its choice for the top post. However, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is believed by many to be the front-runner among those vying to be the next President of the country.

Mr Mukherjee has cancelled a trip to Afghanistan. His office says he wants to remain in Delhi to monitor the economic slowdown. But in political circles, his presence is being read as a sign that he is on stand-by for the Presidential nomination.  Ms Banerjee, who arrived in Delhi yesterday, has reportedly conveyed to the Congress that she will support Mr Mukherjee for President, but not before the Congress declares he is the official candidate for the UPA.

But the Congress doesn't appear ready for that just yet, despite the urging of its allies. That could be because it's still ascertaining whether Mr Mukherjee is a better choice than Vice President Hamid Ansari. Nitish Kumar's party, the JD (U), has said it prefers Mr Ansari. The JD(U) is an important member of the NDA, the coalition led by the BJP. While the BJP is yet to announce its party line, sources say it may be willing to back Mr Mukherjee. BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and LK Advani have been assigned to coordinate the party's efforts.

By conveying her stand to the Congress, Ms Banerjee has efficiently lobbed the ball right back into her political partner's court before she meets its President Sonia Gandhi today.

The West Bengal Chief Minister reportedly does not want to be accused of blocking a Bengali's path to Rashtrapati Bhawan. She has also denied that her support for the candidate shortlisted by the Congress will depend largely on whether the Centre agrees to waive for three years the Rs. 22,000 crores her state owes as interest on loans.

A more cynical view in political corridors is that for Ms Banerjee, a major advantage of Mr Mukherjee's elevation to President of India is that he would no longer be in government.  Their relationship has not been entirely smooth of late.

Mrs Gandhi has been authorised by her party to choose its candidate for President - the election is scheduled for July 19, and counting, if required, will be held on July 22. Sources in the UPA say that the Congress may wait till the Prime Minister returns from the G-20 summit in Mexico on June 24 before announcing its nomination.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, Sharad Pawar and the DMK, all key allies of the Congress in the UPA coalition, have allegedly pledged - directly or indirectly, in Mr Pawar's case - to back Mr Mukherjee. So the only Congress ally who has yet to come on board is Ms Banerjee.

As the heads of regional parties who scored huge in the last elections in their states, Ms Banerjee and Mr Yadav, who met in Delhi last evening, will have a huge say in who becomes the President. The election places at par the votes of all MPs with those of all elected members of state legislatures - so regional parties count for a lot.

It's not just the post of president that's up for grabs. Jaswant Singh of the BJP, according to sources, is hoping to be made Vice-President. Jaswant Singh met Mr Yadav to ask for his support on Tuesday morning. But Mr Yadav has allegedly refused to back a BJP candidate. The BJP reportedly may be open to supporting the UPA candidate for president in exchange for Mr Singh being accepted as the Vice President.
